You May Be Surprised!
I have heard quite a bit of hype about mystery shoppers and to be honest thought it was just a hoax. I decided to find out for myself. I took the plunge and found a website to join...at a cost of $27.

This website contained about 80+ places to sign-up to be a mystery shopper. I signed up for only a few that didn't require my social security number (I still didn't trust giving them much information until I could find out if this was legitimate)

I have to be vague about the names of the places that have given me "shopping assignments" because I am still in the process of completing them.

I suggest that you live in an urban area where there are many chain restaurants and stores. You can list in your application how many miles you are willing to drive to do a "shop".  You can accept or decline any offer that you receive.

Sign up for as many mystery companies that you can because the jobs are not constant. You may receive several jobs per week or you may not receive a job for a couple of months.

Can you get rich doing this? Absolutely not. But, if you enjoy eating out or shopping and have an eye for details you will love the fact that you are reimbursed for your meals and purchases.

Here is my journal.
February 23, 2005 Signed up and paid the fee.
February 25, 2005 Received my first assignment:
Go to assigned fast food fish place twice a week. I was reimbursed up to $7.50 for each visit.

I am to report on amount of time that it took to receive my food, name of cashier and cleanliness of building - inside and out and a few other things.

I was to rotate going to drive-thru and dining inside.

I am still working on this assignment and have already made my $27 back plus much more.

The length of time for the "shops" is 1 to 36 visits depending on their needs. I will be notified by email when I am no longer needed to complete assignments.

March 3, 2005 Received my second assignment:
I was to go to a very nice sit down restaurant and do a review on amount of time to receive my order, servers names and cleanliness of restaurant. This was during a lunchtime period.

This visit involved a lot of details and I had to review the guidelines a couple of times to remember what I was supposed to look for.

I was reimbursed $17 for the lunch meal which paid for about 90% of our total bill. I splurged and got a dessert so the cost of the meal was a little more than normal. You are reimbursed more for dinner meals (approximately $27).

The mystery shopper for this company can only do a "shop" four times a year. I must wait 90 days before I can qualify to work for them again.

March 15, 2005 Received my third assignment:
I received my first shopping assignment. I was very excited at first, but started reading the assignment and felt that it was not worth my time.

I was to go to a upscale store and make a purchase. The reimbursement was only $5 and there was probably nothing in the store that would cost under $30.

I declined the offer - it was not for me. I can save more money shopping with coupons from my site.

March 23, 2005 No new "secret shops" as of yet.

I only signed up for a handful of stores because I am generally too busy to do much more than one or two assignments at a time. I am still going to the fast food fish place twice a week and will not sign up for anything else until I finish this assignment.
