The Singing Christmas Tree

by: JoAnn Edwards, Posted Dec 10th 2007

Christmas should be a joyful time of the year and it certainly can be if we celebrate it in the spirit of music. It was a vast choir of heavenly angels who brought the joyful news of the birth of the Christ Child, The Savior, The Messiah. They sang, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. This appears to be the first Christmas song ever sung. Since the Biblical account of the first Christmas song, we have celebrated Christmas to the tune of everything from Handel's Messiah to Jingle Bells. Traditional Christmas music has been passed down from generation to generation with the greatest of care and enthusiasm.

The tradition of Christmas caroling has been around in North America for close to 200 years. Every year various groups, friends, families and neighbors get together to sing the spirit of Christmas and spread Christmas joy. Caroling is easy and fun. It is usually informal, no costumes and no fancy music. Just remember to bundle up if it's cold in your area. Caroling is just the voices singing the spirit of the season. The songs are ones that people have heard throughout their lives. Most groups go from door-to-door singing to the elderly or housebound and all who will listen. Carolers are usually "rewarded" with hot chocolate or cookies. It's a good and safe idea to carry along flashlights.

My Senior group visits the Nursing Home each December taking Christmas presents and singing Christmas music. We have our own Santa Claus who hands out the gifts. Just to watch the residents sing along with Silent Night or Jingle Bells and see their faces light up when they receive their gift is worth everything. Others go to Children's or Veteran's Hospitals. I'm sure you know of people somewhere who need cheering up this Christmas Season. Music touches everyone, and if you lift someone's spirit for a moment with a song, it's worth it all.

This year, the church I attend is having a "Living Christmas Tree" music presentation. There will be 250 voices and our own live band participating in this production. Our music department is one of the best anywhere around. I am mentioning this because you can watch it live online. It will be presented December 15 & 16 at 7:00pm.EST You will need to go to abbashouse.com (you will find a live link below) and click on "watch live." Media player 10 is required to watch online programming and can be downloaded free. If you don't have it, you may download it after you get to the website. If you're housebound or would enjoy a night of beautiful music, log on to this website. This is what I call "high tech caroling." You can enjoy Christmas music in the comfort of your own home.

As long as families gather to celebrate Christmas together, they will produce new carols to pass along to future generations. If the Christmas season is celebrated with joy, then the music will survive. There is a simple sense of joy in celebrating Christmas and the birth of Christ. If people want to share that joy with others, then that's what Christmas music is for.
